WRITTEN, DIRECTED BY AND STARRING NATALIE PORTMAN
Based on Amos Oz's international best-seller, A TALE OF LOVE AND DARKNESS.
A Tale of Love and Darkness is based on Amos Oz's memories of growing up in Jerusalem before the establishment of the State of Israel. His family, one of many who immigrated to Palestine to escape European persecution, consisted of his academic father, Arieh and his dreamy, imaginative mother, Fania.
Arieh was cautiously hopeful about the future but Fania was not satisfied. The terror of the war and anxiety concerning immigration was followed by the tedium of everyday life which weighed heavily on Fania's spirit. Unhappy in her marriage and intellectually stifled, Fania cheered herself up and entertained 10 year old Amos by making up stories of adventurous treks across the desert. Amos was enraptured when Fania read him poetry and explained words and language in a way which influenced him all his life.
When Independence didn't bring with it the renewed sense of life that Fania had hoped for, she slipped in solitude and sadness. Unable to help her, Amos had to say good-bye to her before he was ready. As he witnessed the birth of a nation he had to come to terms with his own new beginning.
