A Film by Jonathan Paz
(1988, 49 Minutes, Color, Hebrew, English subtitles)
Shrouded in secrecy, little is known of the illustrious Israeli Air force, Now, for the first time, Jonathan Paz presents the astounding story of its origins and the tiny band of airmen who change the course of history.
On the very day in 1948 when Israel became a sovereign state, it was mercilessly attacked by the armies of five Arab nations. Alone, unarmed, embargoed and blockaded, young Israel faced almost certain annihilation.
That night a war-surplus C-46 transport, flown by American volunteers, arrived with a cargo of guns, ammunitions… and a crated Messerschmitt ME-109 fighter plane. It was followed by more transports, bringing more guns, more ammunition, more ME-109…and the Americans fighter pilots to fly them.
In those tense days of 1948, the heroism and sacrifice of the young Americans, both Jew and Gentile, preserved Israel's freedom. Their blood forged the finest air force in the world.
Produced and directed by Jonathan Paz, their story is told with Israeli government archival film and first-person narrative by the men who were there.
